Additional information

Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936, leaving almost no coins bearing his effigy in circulation — the Straits Settlements was among the few territories that had progressed far enough in the production cycle to strike pieces before the minting program was abandoned. This 1984 issue revisits that numismatic near-miss, struck as a collector restrike rather than a circulating piece, decades after the colonial authority that would have issued the original had itself ceased to exist.
