Reverse description Saint George on horseback, depicted in the traditional Benedetto Pistrucci style, slaying the dragon with a lance while the stricken beast writhes beneath the horse's hooves. A small crowned coat of arms of Gibraltar appears in cameo format in the lower left of the field. The composition follows the classic sovereign reverse tradition established at the Royal Mint, adapted here for the Gibraltar quarter sovereign issue.

Additional information

Gibraltar has issued coins under British royal authority since the 18th century, but its quarter sovereign program is a modern commercial product aimed squarely at the bullion and gift market rather than circulation. The St George reverse on this issue follows the Benedetto Pistrucci design tradition maintained across British and Gibraltar gold for over two centuries — Pistrucci's original was cut in 1817 and has never fully left production since.
