World Expo 88, held in Brisbane from April to October 1988, was part of Australia's bicentennial celebration program. These souvenir notes were printed by American Banknote Corporation — a firm with a long history of producing legitimate currency for governments worldwide — which gave the pieces a convincing production quality unusual for commemorative ephemera of the period.

The foil disc security feature is a curiosity: entirely unnecessary for a non-circulating souvenir item, but almost certainly included to reinforce the note-like authenticity of the piece for collectors and fair visitors.
