Newkirk was founded in the September 1893 Land Run that opened the Cherokee Outlet — one of the largest land rushes in American history, with an estimated 100,000 participants racing for claims on a single day. The Diamond Jubilee in 1968 marked 75 years since that founding, and aluminum souvenir dollars of this type were a common fundraising and commemorative vehicle for small Oklahoma towns during the centennial buildup decade, when civic organizations leaned heavily on local currency novelties.
Kay County produced several such issues across different municipalities in this period. Newkirk's example is among the heavier aluminum strikes for the format.
