Obverse description Facing three-quarter bust of Emperor Zeno, helmeted and pearl-diademed, clad in cuirass, depicted in the imperial military manner characteristic of late Roman coinage. The emperor holds a spear diagonally over his right shoulder and bears upon his left arm a large shield decorated with a horseman motif. The legend encircles the bust, rendered in Latin capital letters. The treatment of the imperial effigy reflects the frontal, hieratic style prevalent in fifth-century Byzantine gold coinage.
