Obverse description Facing bust of Emperor Theodosius II, slightly turned to right, helmeted and pearl-diademed, clad in cuirass, holding a spear over the right shoulder and a decorated shield on the left arm; the shield bears a horseman-and-fallen-enemy motif rendered in the late antique military style. The effigy presents a frontal, hieratic quality characteristic of fifth-century Eastern Roman coinage. The encircling legend in Latin is distributed across the upper and lower periphery of the flan.
