Obverse description Frontal facing bust of Emperor Theodosius II, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed, turned very slightly to the right. The emperor holds a spear over his right shoulder and carries a shield in his left hand, its boss decorated with a horseman motif. The legend encircles the bust in Latin capitals, and the overall style reflects the formal, hieratic portraiture characteristic of fifth-century Eastern Roman imperial coinage.
