Obverse description Facing bust of Emperor Theodosius II, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed, with head turned slightly to the right. The emperor is depicted in full military regalia, his right hand raising a spear over his shoulder while his left arm supports a large round shield adorned with the motif of a horseman spearing a fallen enemy. The obverse legend is inscribed in Latin around the periphery, identifying the emperor by name and titles. The portrait reflects the frontal, hieratic imperial style characteristic of 5th-century Eastern Roman coinage. The workmanship is consistent with the Thessalonica mint's output of the period.
