Obverse description Three-quarter facing bust of Theodosius II, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed, with a cross emblem on the breastplate. The emperor holds a spear over his right shoulder while his left arm supports a large round shield decorated in relief with the imperial motif of the emperor on horseback trampling a fallen enemy. The portrait conveys imperial authority in the late antique military style, with fine detail in the helmet crest and armour. The encircling legend reads D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG in Latin characters.
