Obverse description Diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Theodosius I facing right, wearing a pearl diadem with a prominent rosette above the brow and a double-strand drop earring visible at the neck. The emperor's hair is rendered in fine parallel striations swept back from the forehead, with curling locks falling behind the ear in the late Roman imperial style. The breastplate features elaborate pteryges at the shoulder, and the paludamentum is fastened at the right shoulder, its folds cascading across the chest. The obverse legend D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG runs clockwise around the periphery, separated from the bust by a plain inner border. The portrait is executed in high relief with strong modelling, characteristic of the Constantinople mint's refined goldsmithing tradition of the Theodosian period.
