Reverse description An angel stands facing in full figure, rendered in the formal Byzantine style with elaborate robes and large wings spread symmetrically behind the figure. In the right hand the angel holds a long staff surmounted by a staurogram (an early Christogram combining the Greek letters Tau and Rho, an antecedent of the Chi-Rho symbol), while the left hand supports a globus cruciger. The reverse legend VICTORIA AVGG, with an officina letter, encircles the design on the majority of variants (BCV#616, BCV#618), with a variant placing the letter N to the right of the angel (BCV#617); BCV#620 reads VICTORIA AVGU with an officina letter. The exergue typically carries the mint signature CONOB, denoting the Constantinople mint and the high standard of gold fineness.
