| Reverse description | An angel stands facing in full figure, rendered in the formal Byzantine style with elaborate robes and large wings spread symmetrically behind the figure. In the right hand the angel holds a long staff surmounted by a staurogram (an early Christogram combining the Greek letters Tau and Rho, an antecedent of the Chi-Rho symbol), while the left hand supports a globus cruciger. The reverse legend VICTORIA AVGG, with an officina letter, encircles the design on the majority of variants (BCV#616, BCV#618), with a variant placing the letter N to the right of the angel (BCV#617); BCV#620 reads VICTORIA AVGU with an officina letter. The exergue typically carries the mint signature CONOB, denoting the Constantinople mint and the high standard of gold fineness. |
