Obverse description Facing bust of Emperor Louis I (the Pious) depicted in stylized Carolingian manner, shown draped and wearing a diadem or crown, with the figure rendered in a somewhat schematic, late antique-inspired style characteristic of early 9th-century Frankish coinage. The imperial effigy is surrounded by a beaded border. The encircling legend reads HLVDDOVICVS IMP AVG, identifying the ruler as Louis, Emperor Augustus. The portrait, while stylized, conveys imperial authority through its frontal or near-frontal presentation and regal attire.
