Obverse description Frontal facing bust of Emperor Justin I, rendered three-quarters to the right, helmeted and clad in cuirass with paludamentum. The emperor holds a spear over his right shoulder, while the left arm supports a large shield decorated in relief with the motif of a mounted horseman spearing a prostrate fallen enemy. The imperial legend surrounds the effigy in Latin capital letters. The style is characteristic of early Byzantine die-work, combining military iconography with imperial majesty.
