| Obverse description | Pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust of Julius Nepos facing three-quarters right, with a spear held over the right shoulder and a shield visible behind. The effigy is rendered in the late Roman imperial tradition with fine engraving of the helmet crest and armor details. A continuous Latin legend surrounds the bust within the coin's field. |

Julius Nepos was the last emperor the Eastern court ever formally recognized as legitimate ruler of the West — Romulus Augustulus, whom schoolbooks call the last Western emperor, was in Byzantine eyes merely a usurper installed by Odoacer's father Orestes. When Nepos was driven from Italy in 475 and retreated to Dalmatia, he continued issuing coinage in his own name from there until his assassination in 480. Solidi attributable to Milan during his contested reign are extraordinarily rare precisely because his time controlling Italian mints was so brief.
