| Reverse description | Victory standing facing with head turned to the left, holding a tall jeweled cross in her right hand, the cross extending nearly the full height of the type in reference to Christian imperial ideology. A star appears in the upper left field, while the mint-mark letters R and M are placed across the fields flanking the central figure. The exergue bears the inscription COMOB, denoting gold of the highest fineness struck at Rome. The surrounding votive legend VOT XX MVLT XXX records the imperial vows for twenty years fulfilled and thirty years anticipated. The design reflects the Theodosian court's synthesis of Roman triumphal imagery with overtly Christian iconography. |
