Obverse description Facing three-quarter bust of Emperor Anastasius I to right, helmeted and wearing cuirassed armor, the breastplate decorated with pellets in typical Byzantine military fashion. The emperor holds a spear upright over his right shoulder and displays a large decorated shield on his left arm, with the shield face bearing a horseman motif. The effigy conveys imperial authority through rigid frontality and rich martial accoutrements characteristic of late antique Byzantine coinage. The encircling obverse legend identifies the emperor by his full imperial titulature.
