| Obverse description | Central gateway (the Genoese castle or city gate) with a letter beneath, all set within a multifoil (polylobe) border whose interior points are decorated with pellets, the entire design enclosed by a reeded (rope) circle. The gate motif is rendered in the angular, stylised manner characteristic of Genoese hammered billon coinage of the early 15th century. The surrounding legend, written in Gothic uncial characters, identifies the doge by name, title, and ordinal number. The field between the gateway and the polylobe border is plain. |
