Obverse description Central shield bearing the quartered arms of Érard de la Marck, surmounted by a cardinal's hat and supported within an ornate floriate cross that divides the circular legend into four segments. The shield displays the distinctive la Marck heraldic device, rendered in the Gothic style typical of early sixteenth-century Low Countries coinage. The legend, broken by the arms of the cross, runs around the entire circumference in Gothic lettering within a beaded inner border. The overall composition is characteristic of the ecclesiastical coinage of the Prince-Bishops of Liège, with the heraldic shield serving as the principal device in the coin's field.
