Obverse description Central field bearing a quartered royal shield of France and Dauphine, with fleurs-de-lis and dolphins in alternate quarters, surmounted by a radiant sun, the whole enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The circumferential legend in uncial Latin characters reads + LVDOVICVS FRAnCORVM REX, identifying Louis as King of the Franks. The flan is irregular and slightly concave, characteristic of struck billon coinage of the period.

Reverse description A plain cross pattee divides the field into four quarters, each containing an alternating charge of a fleur-de-lis or a dolphin, emblematic of the Dauphine. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the circumferential uncial Latin legend + SIT nOmEn DnI BEnEDITVM running along the outer margin.
