Reverse description A bold Latin cross with splayed arms dominates the field, dividing the reverse into four quadrants, each containing a smaller crosslet. The arms of the main cross are stepped or pattee in style, a characteristic device of Provencal royal coinage under Louis XII. A beaded inner border surrounds the design, with the pious Scriptural legend SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM (Blessed be the name of the Lord) disposed around the periphery in Gothic uncial lettering. The overall execution is characteristic of hammered billon coinage struck at the Aix-en-Provence mint.
