The upper left foreleg is doubled, and the mane is rendered as a series of pellets or short dashes. The head is solid and compact, with a prominent large ear, and a flame-like lick typically issues from the mouth. The tail is rendered as a large leaf form, with a star motif above it. The Iceni occupied what is now Norfolk and parts of Suffolk, and their silver coinage developed largely in isolation from the Gallo-Belgic imports that shaped much of southern British Celtic numismatics. The "Proto Head" series represents an early stage of that local tradition, before the imagery degraded into the near-abstract forms seen on later Iceni issues. ABC 1522 is a scarce variety within a scarce series — these small silvers were never struck in the volumes that Iceni gold was, and the thin flans were prone to splitting.
