Additional information

The "Ecen Ecen Ed" inscription is one of the clearest tribal name-declarations found on any British Iron Age coinage — unusual in a numismatic tradition where legends were often abbreviated to the point of ambiguity. Struck in the years immediately preceding the Claudian invasion of 43 AD, these units represent the Iceni operating under treaty status with Rome, a client-kingdom arrangement that would hold, uneasily, until Prasutagus died and Roman administrators seized Iceni territory outright, triggering Boudica's revolt roughly two decades later.
