Obverse description Facing crowned bust of the king within a stylized architectural or foliate border, the monarch depicted in frontal view wearing a crown and holding a cross-tipped sceptre before him. The figure is rendered in the crude, high-relief Gothic style typical of Anglo-Gascon hammered billon coinage. A partial Latin legend encircles the design, naming the issuing monarch as king of England. The flan is irregular in shape with weak areas of strike consistent with hand-hammered medieval production.
