Obverse description A fully armoured knight stands facing left in the centre of the field, holding an upright sword in his right hand and resting his left hand upon a crowned shield bearing the rampant lion of Holland. The knight wears a plumed helmet and elaborately decorated armour with a sash across the chest. A decorative ribbon or baldric trails behind the figure. The surrounding circular legend, separated by dot stops, reads MO : NO : ARG : PRO : CONFOE : BELG : HOLL, meaning 'New silver coinage of the Confederate Netherlands, Holland', and is contained within a toothed or beaded border aligned with the reeded edge.
