Reverse description The crowned provincial shield of Gelderland, displaying a rampant lion, dominates the central field, surmounted by a royal crown with elaborate foliate decoration. The date 1734 is prominently divided on either side of the shield in the lower field. A continuous circular Latin legend surrounds the design, reading CONCORDIA : RES PARVÆ : CRESCVNT, meaning 'Through Unity Small Things Grow', punctuated by a decorative floral ornament. The legends are rendered in well-spaced Roman capitals, and the milled border frames the design neatly along the entire rim.
