| Obverse description | A hippocamp (sea-horse) depicted in left-facing profile, its equine foreparts rearing upward and its serpentine fish tail coiling beneath, rendered in an archaic Italic style with bold, deeply incised lines. The creature occupies the full extent of the circular coin field, its musculature and scaled hindquarters defined by confident hand-engraving characteristic of early South Italian mint work. The design is contained within a plain border, with no exergual line. |
