Julius Nepos is one of the more complicated figures of the Western Empire's final decade — installed as emperor in 474 by the Eastern court in Constantinople, he was driven out of Ravenna by his own magister militum Orestes in August 475, fleeing to Dalmatia where he continued to claim the title until his murder in 480. That compressed window makes this Ravenna issue exceptionally rare in absolute terms. The VRBIS ROMA reverse type is a conscious archaism, invoking the city's prestige at a moment when Rome itself had long since ceased to matter militarily.
