Reverse description A plain Latin cross occupies the centre of the field, enclosed within a laurel wreath whose apex is tied with a large jewel or pellet ornament at the top. The wreath terminates at its base with a stylised bow, below which the exergual mintmark CONS appears, denoting the Constantinople mint. The composition is austere and emblematic, reflecting the early Byzantine adoption of the Christian cross as the central reverse type on precious-metal coinage.
