Additional information

Trajan's first full year of uncontested rule following Nerva's death in January 98 produced a concentrated burst of civic messaging in bronze. The Pax type belongs to a programmatic issue designed to distance the new administration from Domitian's final years — a period the Senate had formally condemned through damnatio memoriae. Peace was not an abstract virtue here but a pointed political claim.

RIC II 391 is among the earlier attributions in Trajan's sestertius sequence, struck before the Dacian campaigns reshaped his iconographic priorities entirely.
