Additional information

Trajan's Dacian campaigns — two of them, in 101–102 and 105–106 AD — ended with the systematic dismantling of Decebalus's kingdom and the incorporation of its gold and silver mines into Roman imperial revenue. The treasury influx was staggering enough to fund over a decade of building programs in Rome, including Trajan's Column and the Forum complex. This sestertius belongs to the commemorative series that celebrated that conquest, struck across a window when Dacia's economic value to Rome was still being tabulated.

The SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI formula on this issue marks one of the earliest sustained uses of the title Optimus — formally voted to Trajan by the Senate around 114 AD but appearing on coinage well before that date.
