| Obverse description | The obverse depicts a ornate carpentum (a two-wheeled covered ceremonial carriage) drawn to the right by a pair of mules, rendered in fine relief. The carriage features an elaborately decorated arched canopy with sculptural ornamentation on its roof and panelled sides, with a large spoked wheel visible beneath. The legend S P Q R IVLIAE AVGVST arcs across the upper field, identifying the dedication to Julia Augusta (Livia), mother of Tiberius, honouring her with this votive monument decreed by the Senate and Roman people. The entire design is enclosed within a plain inner border and an outer beaded border characteristic of Tiberian bronze coinage. |
