| Reverse description | The emperor Nero, bare-headed and cuirassed with cloak billowing dramatically behind him, is depicted prancing to the right on horseback and couching a spear in his right hand, evoking an image of martial prowess. Flanking him on either side, a mounted soldier rides to the left, each bearing a vexillum (military standard) over the shoulder, framing the central equestrian figure symmetrically. The scene commemorates the decursio, a formal Roman military cavalry exercise performed at imperial funerals and public celebrations. The legend DECVRSIO appears in the upper field, while the senatorial authorization mark S C (Senatus Consultum) is prominently placed in the exergue or lower field. The composition is bold and dynamic, characteristic of the high-quality die engraving associated with the Rome mint under Nero. |
