| Obverse lettering | IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TR POT P P (Translation: Imperator Nero Caesar Augustus, Pontifex Maximus, Tribunicia Potestas, Pater Patriae. Supreme commander (Imperator) Nero Caesar, emperor (Augustus), high priest, tribunician power, father of the country.) |
| Reverse description | Two standing and seated figures occupy the central field in a detailed allegorical composition. At left, Annona stands facing right, holding a cornucopia in her left arm and extending a grain modius toward Ceres; between them, a prow of a ship (modius on prow) is visible at their feet, symbolizing the maritime grain supply to Rome. At right, Ceres is seated on a throne or basket, draped and veiled, holding a torch in her right hand and ears of grain in her left, embodying the divine patronage of agriculture. The legend ANNONA AVGVSTI is inscribed in the upper field, with CERES appearing to the right and S C (Senatus Consultum) in the lower field, authorizing the bronze issue by decree of the Senate. The scene alludes to Nero's concern for the Roman grain supply and his association of imperial policy with divine abundance. |
