| Reverse description | Hadrian stands facing right in military dress, extending his right hand to raise a kneeling female personification of Bithynia who holds a ship's rudder, symbolising the province's maritime importance and its restoration under imperial favour. The emperor holds a scroll in his left hand, signifying his role as lawgiver and benefactor. The senatorial mark S C (Senatus Consultum) appears in the lower field to either side of the central group, affirming the senate's formal authorisation of the issue. The reverse legend RESTITVTORI BITHYNIAE arcs around the upper field in bold Latin capitals. The composition belongs to the celebrated series of provincial restitution reverses struck at Rome circa AD 130–133. |
