| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Hadrian facing right, with the emperor's characteristic short beard and curling hair rendered in fine relief. The effigy presents the emperor with paludamentum over the left shoulder, conveying imperial military authority. The surrounding Latin legend reads IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG, distributed around the full circumference of the flan. The portrait style is characteristic of the earliest Hadrianic coinage of AD 117, closely following Trajanic artistic conventions before the development of the more individualized Hadrianic portrait type. The flan is broad and slightly irregular, typical of hammered Roman sestertii of this period. |
