Additional information

Hadrian's early sestertii from this period were struck while he was consolidating authority after Trajan's death — an accession that was itself disputed, with the adoption recorded only after Trajan died and widely suspected to have been engineered by the empress Plotina. The Spes type belongs to a broader program of virtue coinage Hadrian deployed deliberately, projecting stability onto a succession that many in the Senate viewed with open suspicion.

RIC II.3 679 is a product of the 2007 revision that disaggregated the older RIC II Hadrianic material considerably — collectors working from pre-revision references will find significant renumbering throughout this reign.
