| Reverse description | Nilus, the personification of the River Nile, reclines left upon rocks or a riverbank, his body draped, holding a tall cornucopia in his left arm and a reed in his right hand. Playful children (Nilotic pygmies or putti) surround and climb upon the figure, alluding to the annual floodwaters that fertilize the land. To the left, a hippopotamus emerges from the reeds, occasionally depicted with a child rider. In the lower field, a crocodile swims in the waters of the Nile, completing this rich Egyptianizing allegorical composition. The senatorial authorization mark S C appears in the field. |
