| Reverse description | The river god Nilus reclines to the right, his mature bearded figure surrounded by playful erotes or putti, personifying the fertility and abundance of the Nile's annual inundation. In his hands he holds a reed and a cornucopia overflowing with produce, emblems of the river's life-giving bounty. To the right of the composition, a hippopotamus is depicted among reeds, occasionally shown bearing a child rider, referencing the exotic Nilotic fauna celebrated during Hadrian's Egyptian tour. A crocodile appears in the lower register, swimming in the stylised waters beneath the god. The reverse legend NILVS and the senatorial authority mark S C are disposed in the field, the latter confirming the senatorial issue of this large bronze denomination. |
