| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Hadrian facing right, rendered in high relief with the emperor's characteristic short beard and close-cropped hair beneath the laurel wreath. The effigy displays the paludamentum fastened at the shoulder, conveying imperial and military authority. The encircling legend HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P runs around the periphery in incuse Latin capitals. The portrait exhibits the refined Hellenistic-influenced style characteristic of Hadrianic coinage, with naturalistic facial features and careful attention to the beard's texture. To the left, the enthroned emperor Hadrian is depicted seated on a curule chair upon a raised platform, his right arm extended in a gesture of largesse toward a citizen figure ascending steps below him. The legend LIBERALITAS AVG VII encircles the upper field, commemorating the seventh congiarium distributed under Hadrian's reign. The senatorial authorisation mark S C (Senatus Consultum) appears in the exergue, flanking the base of the platform, as was standard for large bronze denominations. The overall composition is executed in the bold, deeply-struck relief typical of Antonine-era sestertii from the Rome Mint. |
