Additional information

The FELICITAS reverse type on Hadrianic sestertii of this period connects directly to the emperor's unprecedented tour of the eastern provinces, undertaken between 128 and 132 AD. Hadrian used coinage aggressively as propaganda during these travels, issuing types that projected prosperity and divine favor back to Rome while he was absent. The COS III dating pins this piece to a narrow window after his third consulship began in 119 and before his later titulature changed — the P P addition tightens it further to post-128.

Orichalcum sestertii of Hadrian are frequently found with uneven flan preparation, a known characteristic of the Rome mint in this decade rather than any individual strike failure.
