| Reverse description | The emperor Hadrian is depicted on horseback, riding to the right, his right hand raised in the gesture of adlocutio, addressing his troops. Before him stand three or more soldiers bearing legionary standards, rendered in a procession-like composition typical of the Roman military address type. The scene commemorates Hadrian's celebrated tours of the provincial armies, in this case the Syrian legions. The exergual and field inscription EXERCITVS SYRIACVS flanks the scene, with the senatorial authority mark S C prominently placed in the lower field. |
