Obverse description Bare-headed, draped bust of Hadrian facing right, rendered with distinctive portraiture showing the emperor's characteristic curly hair and full beard, the latter being an innovation in imperial portraiture that Hadrian introduced to Roman coinage. The emperor's strong facial features are rendered with considerable sculptural depth and naturalism. The encircling Latin legend reads HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, distributed around the bust within a border of fine beading visible along the coin's rim.
