Obverse lettering HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P
(Translation: Hadrianus Augustus, Consul Tertium, Pater Patriae. Hadrian, emperor (Augustus), consul for the third time, father of the nation.)
Reverse description Hadrian, togate, standing right upon a low tribunal platform, his right hand raised in adlocutio gesture and his left hand holding a volumen (scroll); before him stand three soldiers facing left, each bearing a military standard. The scene commemorates Hadrian's celebrated address to the army of Britain, likely connected to his inspection tour of the province and the construction of Hadrian's Wall. The reverse legend is divided across the field with S C (Senatus Consultum) flanking the central group, and EXERC BRITANN/ICVS appearing in the exergue or field, authorising the bronze issue by senatorial decree.
