The EXERCITVS MOESIACVS sestertii belong to Hadrian's celebrated "army series," a group of issues celebrating individual provincial legions and armies struck likely in connection with his extensive tours of the empire's frontiers. Hadrian visited Moesia — the Danubian province bordered by the Danube to the north and Thrace to the south — during his Balkan travels of the early 130s, personally reviewing troops and famously tightening military discipline across the frontier garrisons.
The series as a whole is scarce; individual army types were produced in limited quantities relative to standard imperial issues.
