| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Hadrian facing right, with a short, neatly curled beard characteristic of his portraiture, rendered in the finely modeled Hellenistic style favored during his reign. The emperor's hair is depicted in wavy, layered locks beneath the laurel wreath, with the drapery of the paludamentum visible at the truncation of the shoulder. The encircling legend HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS runs along the outer rim in crisp Latin capitals. The portrait is executed with a high degree of sculptural relief, conveying imperial authority and the philhellenic aesthetic Hadrian championed. The coin field is broad and uncluttered, placing full emphasis on the imperial effigy. |
