| Obverse lettering | HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS (Translation: Hadrianus Augustus. Hadrian, emperor (Augustus).) |
| Reverse description | The personification of Clementia, goddess of mercy and imperial leniency, stands in full length facing left, draped in a long stola and palla. In her extended right hand she holds a patera, symbol of ritual offering, while her left hand rests on a long vertical sceptre. The figure occupies the central field of the flan, and the divided legend CLEMENTIA AVG encircles the upper portion of the reverse, with COS III P P and the senatorial authority mark S C completing the inscription around and below the figure. The composition reflects Hadrian's deliberate propagandistic emphasis on clemency as a virtue of his reign. |
