| Reverse description | The personification of Africa reclines to the left, wearing a distinctive elephant-scalp headdress — an iconographic attribute identifying the province — and holds a scorpion in her extended hand. To her left, a basket or modius filled with corn ears or fruits alludes to the agricultural abundance of the province. The senatorial authorisation mark S C (Senatus Consulto) appears prominently in the field, flanking the central figure, while the legend AFRICA is inscribed along the upper portion of the reverse. The composition is typical of Hadrian's celebrated 'Provinces' series, celebrating the diversity of the Roman Empire. |
