The ADVENTVS series under Hadrian documents one of the most extensive imperial tours in Roman history — between 121 and 132 AD, he visited nearly every province of the empire, a program of personal inspection unprecedented for a sitting emperor. Mauretania, divided into Caesariensis and Tingitana, required careful management; the region had seen serious unrest under Trajan and remained militarily sensitive. This coin commemorates his arrival there, part of a broader programmatic coinage celebrating each province visited in sequence.
The Mauretania issues are among the scarcer stops in the ADVENTVS run, reflecting the province's relative remoteness from Rome's commercial networks.
