| Reverse description | Hadrian stands to the right in military dress, his right hand raised in a gesture of greeting or address, his left hand holding a volumen (scroll); facing him, the personification of Judaea stands to the left, extending a patera in one hand and holding an incense box in the other. Between the two principal figures stands an altar, typically shown with a bull at its base as a sacrificial element. At the feet of the Judaea figure appear two or three children, or alternatively two children bearing palm fronds flanking the altar, symbolizing the provinces' welcome of the emperor during his celebrated tour of the eastern provinces. The scene commemorates Hadrian's adventus, the formal imperial arrival ceremony, to the province of Judaea circa 130 AD. |
