The ADVENTVS coinage — "arrival" issues — commemorated Hadrian's extensive tours of the provinces, a program of imperial inspection and display unparalleled in scope before or since. Italy's inclusion among these types is historically pointed: by Hadrian's reign, the Italian peninsula had lost much of its administrative primacy to the provinces, and issuing an ADVENTVS type for Italia itself carried a deliberate political charge, reasserting the homeland's symbolic dignity. Hadrian spent more time outside Italy than any previous emperor.
RIC II.3 1763 belongs to the substantial revision of Hadrian's bronze coinage undertaken by the OCRE/RIC2 project, which significantly reclassified and renumbered types from the older Mattingly corpus.
